Promotion of rural Savings and Credit Cooperatives has remained a steady focus of COPPADES since its establishment in 1991. These community-owned micro credit organizations do not just provide financial services they have played a vital role in empowering the poorest of the poor and otherwise disadvantaged communities in freeing them of the vicious cycle of indebtedness. Currently there are over 30 such cooperatives owned by women, Dalits and the poorest in the rural communities of Lamjung District. These cooperatives are assisting the poor to save money, get loan for enterprises and train them in income generating activities. These organizations have enabled the rural people to look for opportunities on their own and make choices for their lives to move away from the long drawn slave-like situation they were in for centuries. |
