ICT Project Photo Report

COPPADES strives to address the existing gap between the rural and the urban and the rich and the poor with regards to access to information and educational opportunities. Particularly the students studying in the public schools gravely lack the knowledge of digital technology and the use of computers in learning. COPPADES, since 2001, has implemented Basic Computer and Information and Communication Technology Education Project in collaboration with World Computer Exchange, a US based NGO that works for bridging the digital gap. COPPADES has also received support from Computer Aid International, UK, and Department for International Development (DFID) Nepal in the process. So far over 300 public schools and community libraries have acquired a minimum of five computers each including training on the use of computer and the Internet and other follow up and advisory support. The use of the Internet has been a rapidly growing phenomenon in the present day world. The Internet has made a great impact on the way people work in business, health, agriculture, human rights issues, and governance. Through this project COPPADES has contributed to building a much needed IT related human resource to cope with the growing use of digital technology.

Technology Background
The worlds least developed countries including Nepal have the opportunity to rapidly develop education, health, agriculture, tourism, trade and various other sectors using information and Communication technology (ICTs). The extensive application of this technology will produce economic development, development of democratic norms and values, proportional distribution of resources and enhancement of public awareness thereby raising living standards and eventually contributing to poverty alleviation. It is the information technology, which will turn out to be a strong infrastructure for mitigating Nepals geographical adversities. In the coming years, globally, there will be a significant difference in the economic conditions of the countries developed in the field of information technology and of the countries lagging behind in this field. In this context, there should be a focus of international community, NGOs and government to extend their support to developing countries in the promotion of ICTs. Such assistance will play a vital role in the development of east developed countries like Nepal. COPPADES works with this conviction.

Future of BCICT Education Project
The future plans of COPPADES can be listed as follows:
Provide access to computers for remote public schools, public libraries and telecentres. Provide Internet facilities gradually to public schools, Village Development Committees, community libraries, community owned Savings and Credit Cooperatives and NGOs and advocacy groups. Promote the use of ICTs to promote e-commerce, e-education, e-health, e- farming, e-governance and the transfer technology to rural areas. Develop public network among different communities for social, cultural, political information exchange and school networks for different schools to share their ideas, views, opinions, and educational resources as well as to exchange traditional and cultural values and resources through the use of ICTs. Publicize local products, values and cultural assets through the development and use of Websites.

BCICT Project Highlights

• Helped to develop competent manpower in computer and ICTs in communities involving public schools and communities.
• Many remote public schools have started formal as well as informal computer education programs for on school and off-school youths in the communities.
