Lamjung, with an area of 1692 Sq.Km is situated about 200 Km west of Kathmandu. Although the district headquarters in Besisahar is accessible by a motorable road, most parts of Lamjung, especially in the eastern regions remain untouched by modern forms of transportation. The means of movement are portering and walking.
The population density of Lamjung is 90.8 inhabitants per sq.Km .However, the population density related to agriculture is much higher, which is over 390.9 per Sq.Km of cultivable land .There is tremendous disparity in the literacy rate between women and men, as well as across various castes and ethnic groups. The discriminated castes, so called Dalits, have an illiteracy rate of 70%. They are composed of Kamis, Damais, Sarkis and other occupational castes .They account for over 15% of the total population in the district.
A 2% minority of the households cultivate farmlands of more than one hectare each, while over 60% are either landless or marginal and small farmers. Moreover, the southern region is more densely populated than the north. Availability of food is a major constraint. The food situation is worse in eastern Village Development Committees (VDCs). On average only about 50% of the district households have sufficient food for more than 5 months from their agricultural resources.
COPPPADES programs cover more than one third of Lamjung and nearly 30% of its population. Its programs are mainly implemented in the eastern part of the district. COPPADES currently operates in 32 of the 61 VDCs in the district.
