About Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked  country with a total land area of 147,181sq. Km. Borders: The country borders with China in the North and India in the south. Population: The countrys total population is more than 2.5 crores (25 million) of which women constitute a little over 50 percent of it. Geography: The country can be divided into three geographical regions as Himalayan region, Middle Hill region and the Southern Terai flat land. According to the 1991 Population Survey Report, 7.82 percent people stay in Himalayan Region, 45.56 percent people stay in Mountain Region and 46.62 percent people stay in the Terai Region. The elevation rises from less than 1000 feet from sea level in the south to the highest mountain in the world of more 28000 feet - the Everest (the Sagarmatha) in the north. Economy: Nepal is the least developed countries with more than 50 percent of population below the poverty line earning less than a dollar a day. And 90 percent population lives in rural areas. Over 82 percent of active labor force is engaged in agriculture since the economy of Nepal is agro -based; the majority of her population largely depends upon farming for their income and employment. Over 40 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is thus contributed by this sector.
